The ghillie suit, or the “yowie suit”, may seem quite odd in an urban area, but once you wander into the woods and find yourself wondering a moving lump of moss, you will understand why the ghillie suit was invented!
The suit’s purpose is to break up the human outline (especially the head and the shoulders) and to camouflage its wearer as effectively as possible. The suit is built upon a base layer on which thick jute-like threads of different colors have been sewn. The threads break up the human outline creating an odd yowie-looking form. The coloring of the threads helps the wearer blend into their surroundings while the threads also create shadows that hide the suit’s wearer even from the trained eye. All in all, the ghillie suit works as a camouflage in many ways! You can blend in with your surroundings even better by adding materials found from the nature to the suit, such as branches and leaves.
The Mil-Tec ghillie suit consists of (4) parts: pants, a jacket, headgear and a rifle cover/additional camouflage rag. Approximately 20 cm long threads have been sewn on the polyester base layers of each element of the costume for camouflage effect. The base layer consists of regular trousers, a jacket and a piece of headgear which have been covered with different colored threads to enhance the camouflage effect.
The jacket has jute-like threads sewn onto its front and back as well as on the sleeves. The jacket has pass-throughs to the pockets on both sides so you can access the pockets underneath. The jacket is fastened in front with snap buttons.
The pants have threads sewn onto their front and back and they are tightened around the waist with a separate drawstring. The pants have pass-throughs to access the pockets underneath.
The headgear is a fully camouflaged, short brimmed hat with a shoulder length hem. The hat has a drawstring and a chin strap to tighten it around the head. The front of the hat has thinner mesh to help mask the person underneath but which does not obscure sight.
The additional camouflage rag is an approximately 1.5 m long elastic band. As with all the other parts of the suit, jute-like threads have been sewn onto the rag also. The elastic band has loops at each end so that, for example, it would be easier to camouflage the gun.
The ghillie suit is a one size fits all, so whether you are 160 cm or 200 cm tall, you will be able to fit in the suit without any modifications. Thus, both the small and the tall can wear the suit. It can also be modified to fit the wearer better. In the picture, the person wearing the ghillie suit is 190 cm tall.
